Hemp has really made its way into our society. There are tons of products that get that special something from hemp. You’ll find energy drinks, chocolate, pesto, and energy bars all enhanced with the goodness of the hemp plant (industrial hemp).
The hemp plant is made up of hundreds of compounds and different parts, each with its own unique effects and uses. For example, hemp seeds are used as a superfood in food products or turned into very healthy cooking oil. Plus, hemp grows pretty much anywhere and, at least when it comes to industrial hemp, isn’t very demanding. That’s why more and more hemp is being grown—a trend we’re totally on board with. Back in 2015, just under 20,000 (19,970) hectares were cultivated in the European Union, and by 2020, that number had already grown to nearly 35,000 (34,540) hectares.
This shows that hemp is becoming more and more popular with farmers, too. Not just because hemp is great for fiber production and food, but also because it does wonders for our soil. Hemp can actually clean up contaminated or polluted soil—all you have to do is plant hemp on the affected land, and the soil will noticeably improve.
This process is called phytoremediation and it can make soil usable again. This just goes to show how versatile the hemp plant is and how its different compounds can be used. Beyond the fibers and seeds, other active ingredients are super popular and basically everyone’s talking about them.
The cannabinoid CBD
Other parts of the hemp plant that are popular as wellness products, for relaxation, or even as medical products are the so-called cannabinoids. One of the best-known cannabinoids that’s sold legally is cannabidiol, better known as CBD.
That’s why cannabis and its cannabinoids are getting more and more recognition and use in medicine. More and more people want to buy CBD and enjoy the plant without worries. Cannabinoids come in all sorts of forms. The most common products are CBD oil or CBD flowers, also known as CBD weed. CBD weed refers to the flowers that grow on the hemp plant.
Once the hemp plant has finished flowering, the plants are harvested and the flowers are separated from the leaves and stems, then gently dried.
