Hemp protein for athletes: natural and vegan

Hemp protein is obtained from hemp seeds and is vegan. The article explains what hemp protein contains, how it differs from whey and what you should look for when buying.

Hemp protein for athletes: natural and vegan

Hemp protein is a vegan protein powder made from hemp seeds. I still remember the time when my kitchen cupboard was full of colourful protein shakes: vanilla, chocolate, cookies & cream. All of them whey.

Then came the moment that changed everything. A training buddy, vegan and pretty fit, handed me a green bag. “Try this: hemp protein.” I was sceptical, but curious.

Hemp protein: what is really inside

Hemp seeds are small nutrient powerhouses. Hemp protein powder contains around 50% protein, plus omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, magnesium, iron and zinc. All natural, nothing isolated. The cool thing is: hemp protein contains all essential amino acids.

Hemp protein vs. whey: an honest comparison

Whey provides a little more pure protein per serving, no question. When it comes to sustainability, however, hemp is ahead: hemp grows quickly and needs hardly any water, fertiliser or pesticides. Whey comes from dairy production, which is known to be anything but climate friendly. You can read more about cultivation in the article Sustainability in hemp cultivation.

So if natural ingredients and sustainability matter to you, hemp protein is more than just an alternative. It is the logical next step.

Recipes and ideas for everyday life

Hemp protein tastes slightly nutty and earthy. That takes some getting used to at first, but with the right combination it becomes really tasty. My favourite recipe: 2 tbsp hemp protein, a banana, a little oat milk, a teaspoon of cocoa powder and a date, all into the blender. And you have a shake that tastes great.

You can also stir hemp protein into porridge, add it to pancake batter or mix it into soups. I even know someone who sprinkles it over salads as a topping. It tastes better than it sounds! You will find more ideas for cooking with hemp in the article Cooking with hemp seed oil.

What to look for when buying

Not all hemp protein is the same. Look for organic quality so that it is free from pesticides and genetic engineering. Cold pressing preserves the valuable fatty acids and nutrients. Transparent origin is just as important, ideally from Switzerland or the EU. And: 100% hemp seeds, no cheap fillers. In Switzerland, hemp seeds are not considered a novel food and may be sold without authorisation (BLV).

At Green Passion you will find the organic hemp protein powder, 450g made from organic hemp seeds from EU farming. You will find more hemp seed products in our hemp food category.
