The best filters for CBD flowers

When you smoke CBD buds, unfortunately, it's not just cannabinoids with positive properties that are released, but also harmful substances like nicotine and tar that can damage your lungs. To minimize these toxins, a filter made of activated charcoal is added to the joint or cigarette. Since cannabinoids like CBD and THC are smaller molecules than the harmful substances mentioned above, they're not affected by the filter.

Activated charcoal is used as a filter because it has an extremely large surface area, which means it can filter out a lot of harmful substances. Just one gram of activated charcoal has an internal surface area of up to 500-1500 square meters, and a teaspoon of activated charcoal can have the surface area of a soccer field! This is thanks to its many tiny pores, which look like a complex maze.

How is an activated charcoal filter made?

Activated charcoal filters used for joints or cigarettes are made from a small tube filled with activated charcoal balls or pellets. Each end is sealed with a perforated plastic or ceramic cap. Activated charcoal not only offers a large surface area, but its porous texture also means it has a lot of contact with harmful substances and smoke particles. These larger, harmful molecules get filtered out, while the smaller molecules like cannabinoids can pass through the charcoal without a problem. In our CBD shop, you can buy activated charcoal filters or CBD online.

Nicotine, nickel, tar, arsenic, and polonium are the most well-known, but tobacco smoke can actually contain more than 600 different harmful substances. Some of them can even be carcinogenic. Besides the usual toxins, the burning process can also create other harmful gases. Nitrosamines, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and cyanide compounds are just a few examples. That's why a good filter is so important.

Studies show that regular cigarettes release a lot of free radicals in the smoke, which are a highly reactive class of carcinogenic oxidants. When comparing regular cigarettes with charcoal filters to those without, the effectiveness of charcoal at filtering and reducing free radicals was evaluated.

With filters made of regular cellulose acetate and different types and amounts of activated charcoal, a reduction of radicals in the gas phase (>70%) was observed, but not in the particle phase. For the different types of activated charcoal, the reduction of gas-phase radicals depended on the dose, but was similar overall. The more charcoal (25-300mg), the more gas-phase radicals were reduced – even with just 25mg of activated charcoal, 41% of these radicals were filtered out.

So, it's been shown that even small amounts of activated charcoal – even if only in the gas phase of the smoke – can absorb a lot of harmful substances. To filter out other toxins like tar in the particle phase, you can also use a cellulose filter.

At Green Passion® you'll find not just a huge selection but also the best quality filters. Plus, in our online shop you'll also find activated charcoal filters made from eco-friendly materials that are perfect for all kinds of hand-rolled joints.

Should I always use an activated charcoal filter with my CBD buds?

The answer is simple: Yes, it's always recommended to use an activated charcoal filter in your joint! It's also important to know that filters made for regular cigarettes tend to get clogged when used with cannabis buds. That's because the dense cellulose acetate fibers aren't suitable for essential oils like terpenes.

    Are there alternatives to tobacco?

You should also be aware that the number of harmful substances that can irritate your airways is highest when using regular paper tips and smoking with tobacco. That's why herbal blends are a great alternative to tobacco when rolling your own. In our Green Passion® online shop, you'll find a high-quality, nicotine-free tobacco substitute made from various herbs by Real Leaf. It doesn't just taste great, but it's also perfect for rolling thanks to its smooth texture. Raspberry, marshmallow, and mullein leaves make for an enjoyable smoking experience.
