CBD joints: production, strains and quality features

How a CBD joint is made, which strains end up in pre-rolls and how to recognise a well-made joint.

CBD joints: production, strains and quality features

At first glance, a CBD joint looks simple: paper, flowers, filter. Yet each of these parts determines how evenly a pre-roll burns and how well the aroma of the flower comes through. In this article we look at how a CBD joint is made, which strains are used in pre-rolls and which features show you quality.

What is a CBD joint?

A CBD joint is a ready-rolled cone filled with ground CBD flowers from hemp with a high CBD content and a THC content below the Swiss limit of 1 percent. In shops they are also called pre-rolls or pre-rolled joints. Green Passion joints contain neither tobacco nor nicotine.

How a CBD joint is made

1. Choosing the flowers

It all starts with the flower. Pre-rolls work best with strains that have a distinct aroma and a structure that is easy to grind. At Green Passion we mainly use indoor flowers, which grow under controlled conditions and give a consistent result.

2. Grinding

The flowers are ground finely and evenly. Pieces that are too coarse leave gaps, material that is too fine compacts and lets hardly any air through. The goal is a loose but even mix.

3. Filling

The ground flowers go into pre-formed cones. Our pre-rolls are filled by hand. The amount is what matters: a King Size joint needs enough material to keep its shape, but should not be packed so tightly that the draw becomes too stiff.

4. Paper and filter

Green Passion uses rice paper cones with a paper filter. Rice paper is thin and adds little taste of its own, so the aroma of the flower stays in the foreground. The paper filter gives the mouthpiece stability and stops plant material from coming through. Read more about filters in our comparison of activated carbon and paper filters.

5. Closing and packing

Finally, the tip is closed so nothing falls out. The joints are then packed so they are protected from pressure, light and moisture.

Pre-roll or self-rolled?

From a product point of view, the difference is mainly consistency. A pre-roll has a defined amount of filling, uniform paper and a fixed filter. If you roll your own, you choose paper, filter and amount freely, but you need loose CBD flowers and some practice. Pre-rolls are the choice if you do not want to carry any accessories.

The strains in our CBD joints

Our King Size pre-rolls come with pure flower fillings and as refined versions:

  • Passion Kush, Amnesia Haze, Maui Wowy, Fruit Punch: each filled with a single indoor strain, so the typical aroma of the strain stays recognisable, from earthy to citrus to tropical fruit.
  • Crunch Punch: filled with CBD Crunch, a mix of smaller flower parts. A budget option made the same way.
  • Red Twist: a mix of CBD Crunch and CBD hash Red Lebanese.
  • Coated Royal and Coated Supreme: refined joints in which the filling is combined with other CBD products and the cone is additionally coated.

The CBD content ranges between 16 and 42 percent depending on the strain. The exact figures are on each product page. Read more about growing methods in the article CBD indoor vs outdoor.

How to recognise a good CBD joint

  • Even filling: the joint feels equally firm along its whole length, with no soft spots or lumps.
  • Clean paper: thin, even and without tears. Rice paper and unbleached papers add little taste of their own.
  • The right draw: a well-filled joint draws easily without being loose.
  • Stable filter: the filter sits firmly and holds the filling back.
  • Clear information: strain, CBD content and THC content are stated on the product page or packaging. Reputable suppliers provide certificates of analysis on request.
  • Freshness: airtight, light-proof packaging preserves aroma and moisture.

Legal framework in Switzerland

In Switzerland, hemp products such as CBD joints must have a THC content below 1 percent. Our joints are below this limit. Sales are for people aged 18 and over only. If you travel abroad, note that many countries have much lower limits.

Storing them properly

Keep CBD joints in their original packaging in a cool, dry and dark place. This way aroma and structure last longer. Store them out of reach of children and pets.
