Soon, smoking weed could be legal in Basel, since the Federal Office of Public Health has given the green light for the first pilot project for cannabis distribution there.
Around 400 people from Basel are taking part in the pilot project and will soon be able to legally buy cannabis for non-medical use at pharmacies in Basel-Stadt. The pilot is a joint project by the University of Basel, the University Psychiatric Clinics, and the Basel-Stadt Health Department. All three will closely monitor and support the project from a scientific perspective.
Since May 15, 2021, Switzerland has allowed limited-time and location-based trials for the controlled sale of cannabis for non-medical use. According to the Federal Office of Public Health, some applications have been submitted since that date. In our shop, you can already buy legal cannabis.
Strict rules for cannabis
However, these pilot projects are subject to strict requirements. Participants' health must always be monitored, and only adults are allowed to take part. Another rule is that participants have to prove they are familiar with cannabis and have already used it before the study. Advertising during the study is also forbidden, and the organic cannabis received cannot be shared under any circumstances.
400 participating cannabis users
The Basel pilot project is expected to start this summer with about 400 participants. According to the Health Department, they will be able to buy products like dried cannabis flowers and hash in selected pharmacies in Basel-Stadt. The products will be supplied by "Pure Production," based in Zeiningen AG. Since early 2020, this company has had a special permit from the Federal Office of Public Health.
The pilot trials allowed since May 15, 2021, aim to provide insights into consumption habits and the effects of controlled distribution on the black market. The projects are also meant to show how controlled access to cannabis affects the health of participating users.
