Activated carbon filters and filter tips for cigarettes: the difference

They're two different products that often get lumped together.

A filter tip is a rolled piece of cardboard. It gives the end its shape and stops loose material from slipping through. That's all it does.

An activated carbon filter is a tube filled with activated carbon granules. Activated carbon has a very large internal surface area to which molecules bind. The principle is called adsorption and is also used in water treatment and cooker hoods. The uptake is selective and limited, and it doesn't make smoking harmless.

Which size fits: Regular, Slim or Xtra Slim

• Regular, around 8 millimetres. The classic standard, e.g. actiTube Regular.
• Slim, around 7 millimetres. The most common compromise.
• Xtra Slim, around 6 millimetres. Fits narrow papers, e.g. Purize and Gizeh Xtra Slim.

With King Size Slim papers, Slim and Xtra Slim are the norm. With short papers, Regular is a better fit.

The Jilter Classic works differently from the others. It's a reusable plastic holder into which a filter is inserted. So it's the holder that gets reused, not the filter.

No. Activated carbon binds molecules to its surface, and this capacity is limited. Once it's exhausted, the filter no longer works as intended. Activated carbon filters are single-use products.

They are not subject to the sales restrictions of the Tobacco Products Act, which has been in force since 1 October 2024 and sets a minimum age of 18 for tobacco products, e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. That minimum age does, however, apply to the products filters are usually used with.
