Cannabigerol, or CBG for short, is one of the many cannabinoids produced by a cannabis plant. CBG is the non-acidic form of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). It's the base cannabinoid from which other key compounds like THC and CBD are formed. That's why CBG is currently considered one of the most important cannabinoid compounds. If it were possible to monitor CBG growth, it could open the door to new cannabis strains with even more THC and CBD.
CBG is a super important precursor in cannabis plant production. Without CBG, the cannabis plant can't synthesize key components like THC and CBD. Since CBG is used as a building block for THC and CBD, usually less than 1 percent of the CBG remains in the plant at harvest.
In some cannabis types, the final CBG content is below 0.1 percent. Cannabis has to be able to produce a good amount of CBG to then make small amounts of THC and CBD. But CBG is more than just a building block for THC and CBD. It's believed that CBG has some significant benefits.
CBG seeds are a lot more expensive to produce than other seeds. That's because CBG is so important—it's basically the foundation that other cannabinoids depend on. To explain this, let's first talk about cannabinoids before getting back to CBG plants.
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds mainly found in cannabis, in the human body, and in some plants. These compounds have already shown some benefits. Lots of people have said that CBG was a big help for them!
CBG, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid
CBG isn't a psychoactive cannabinoid. That means it doesn't get you high like THC does. It's still unclear exactly how CBG interacts with other cannabinoids. So far, it's not proven whether CBG can boost other cannabinoids. This boosting effect is also known as the entourage effect.
CBG-rich cannabis seeds
Because of what people think about CBG, cannabis experts are currently working on a seed variety that's rich in CBG. It's possible that in the next year or two, CBG-rich cannabis could be grown from feminized seeds. Early reports suggest it might even be possible to do this with almost zero THC in the flowers. That would mean the first rich CBG strains could be classified as a new kind of "cannabis light."
So CBG is following in the footsteps of CBD. Both are non-psychoactive compounds. CBD-rich flowers with low THC have become known as the light side of cannabis. Their flowers are now super popular in some countries. You can buy them freely and legally at tobacco shops, herbal stores, health shops, and head shops.
Today's CBD flowers with that typical "cannabis touch" look and smell like natural cannabis. Many people see smoking CBD flowers as a good alternative to satisfy the craving for a joint or cigarette. People often report that CBD brings valuable benefits. Now the question is, would CBG flowers also become popular if they were totally THC-free?
Breeding CBG
Good breeding isn't a secret. It takes hard work and years of research and development to reach a goal. Good breeders aren't people who just cross two plants they like to get something nice. Good breeders take the time to design different breeding lines to finally reach that one goal. But overall, breeding isn't rocket science. Some experts run strict lab tests and large-scale field trials for every production. Developing consistent crops of every size this way takes several years.
