Is CBD oil the same as hemp oil? No. The root of the confusion actually lies in the definition of hemp oil. Sometimes, the word “hemp oil” is mistakenly used to refer to the CBD-rich substance extracted from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant: CBD oil.

First off, it’s important to know that using the terms “hemp oil” and “CBD oil” can be really confusing. Some people use “hemp oil” as a synonym for “CBD oil.” But others actually mean hemp seed oil when they say “hemp oil.” Hemp seed oil doesn’t contain active CBD.

To make things easier for you, here’s what you should understand after reading this article.

  • CBD oil has two main sources: hemp and marijuana plants.
  • Cannabis refers to both marijuana and hemp plants – marijuana and hemp are two different types of plants.
  • The word “hemp oil” is sometimes used to refer to the CBD-rich substance extracted from the flowers and leaves of the
  • hemp plant: CBD oil. But it’s also used to refer to hemp seed oil, which doesn’t contain active CBD. Hemp seed oil is not the same as hemp seed oil. However, the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant are a source of CBD oil.
  • CBD oil is sold in a variety of forms: full-spectrum (whole plant), THC-free distillate, and CBD isolate.

While CBD oil comes from marijuana or hemp plants and can be used as a tincture or in capsules, hemp seed oil is pressed directly from the hemp seeds themselves and can be used as a dietary supplement because of its high nutritional value. Hemp seeds contain protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and a mix of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Hemp seed oil can be part of a meal, like in salad dressing, and is often sold in health food stores next to flaxseed and fish oils. The seeds themselves can also be eaten in muesli or smoothies.

To make hemp seed oil, the seeds are cold-pressed to extract the oil. CBD oil, on the other hand, is made from other parts of the hemp plant, mainly the leaves and flowers. Even though hemp seed oil might contain a tiny bit of CBD, the amount is so small it’s basically nonexistent in the product.

Hemp oil and CBD oil can be the same, depending on whether the oil is made from the flowers and leaves (like CBD oil) or from the seeds (hemp seed oil). Hemp seed oil is not CBD oil, but the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant are a source of CBD oil.

Hemp vs. Marijuana Plants

CBD oil comes from both marijuana and hemp plants. The hemp plant and the marijuana plant are two different types of cannabis plants. Hemp plants have been used for thousands of years for their fibers, seeds, oils, leaves, and flowers to make paper, textiles, building materials, as well as food and supplements.

In the United States, industrial hemp – as hemp is sometimes called – refers to a variety of Cannabis sativa L plants that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC; marijuana is legally classified as cannabis with more than 0.3 percent THC.

Some countries classify different types of hemp differently. The European Union sets the legal limit for hemp at 0.2 percent THC. While several US states have decriminalized marijuana use, it’s still classified as a Schedule I drug under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, which has largely slowed down cannabis research. The difference in resin content between hemp and marijuana is important. Since marijuana usually contains much more resin than hemp, it’s likely that marijuana plants have more CBD than hemp plants.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is made from the seeds of the Cannabis Sativa plant. It contains omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid, and other antioxidants. It also has nutritionally valuable B vitamins and vitamin D.

Using hemp seed oil won’t get you high, since it doesn’t have any tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and little to no CBD.

Effects and Benefits

Hemp seed oil is a great source of nutrients, since manufacturers add it to healthy products like snack bars, breads, cookies, and yogurts. Hemp seed oil is rich in fatty acids and essential amino acids.

How is it made?

Manufacturers extract hemp seed oil from the seeds of the hemp plant. Because the oil comes from the seeds and not from the leaves, buds, or stems of the cannabis plant, hemp seed oil doesn’t contain THC.

CBD Oil

In general, there are three different types of CBD oil available on the market:

  • Full-spectrum CBD oil, which contains all the compounds from the cannabis plant, including THC (but in very low amounts)
  • Broad-spectrum CBD oil, which has many compounds but no THC
  • CBD oil from CBD isolate, which contains the following

It’s important to remember that some manufacturers use the terms hemp oil and CBD oil interchangeably, since these terms aren’t regulated. CBD products should also be checked by looking at the Certificate of Analysis (COA). This check is usually done by a third party. The only way to really know what’s in a CBD oil product is to look at the COA.

How is it made?

CBD oil is made from the flowers and leaves of the hemp and cannabis plant. Manufacturers extract a CBD-rich extract and other compounds using advanced extraction methods like CO2 extraction. While manufacturers have to keep all components intact for full-spectrum CBD oil, for CBD isolate they only extract the CBD.
